16-11- The Near Misses
16. Jack Del Rio – 1 point
15. Adam Gase- 1 point
14. Bill O’Brien- 5 points
13. John Fox- 5 points
12. Sean Payton- 12 points
11. Gary Kubiak- 12 points
10. Mike Zimmer- 18 points
Mike Zimmer has transformed a previously dysfunctional Vikings franchise into a team that will likely challenge for a Super Bowl in the coming years.
He is a terrific motivator who gets his teams to play hard and he isn’t afraid to take risks, this means he will have plenty more success as a head coach. He is one of the best player developers in the League.
9. Marvin Lewis- 21 points
Despite the hot takes that get fired his way, Marvin Lewis is one of the best coaches in the NFL. His eye for talent is superb and everyone who ends up on the Bengals roster gets put in a situation where they will be able to contribute.
He hasn’t won a playoff game yet, but the Bengals have had some of the worst luck in sporting history on that way.
8. Andy Reid- 23 points
Andy Reid succeeds wherever he goes as he is both a terrific motivator and a great tactician. His teams always play hard and this is because he is a calm character who allows players to be free spirits on the field.
Reid has consistently made the playoffs as a head coach despite never really having a truly elite roster on his hands. He maximises his talent, so he deserves a place on this list.
7. Mike McCarthy- 37 points
McCarthy often gets unfairly criticised by Packers fans, which is strange because he is a genuinely good coach. His teams are usually well drilled and he is a creative playcaller who often finds the right balance between creative freedom and discipline.
He is a quarterback whisperer of sorts and because of this Aaron Rodgers has become one of the best Quarterbacks of all time.
6. Mike Tomlin- 41 points
One of the youngest coaches in the league, Tomlin has established himself firmly amongst the elite in the League. He truly is a players coach and he probably embodies the new type of NFL Head Coach as opposed to a strict shouting disciplinarian. His unique player management style has warmed him to the entire Steelers roster and he models himself on Hall of Fame Coach Tony Dungy.
He already has one championship and he could get a couple more if the Steelers remain healthy.
5. John Harbaugh- 54 points
The better Harbaugh, John has done a terrific job building on the early 21st century success in Baltimore. An innovative mind in terms of tactics, Harbaugh is a tough coach but this attitude works in Baltimore as they have a history of being a hardy and tough franchise.
He worked wonders last year with a depleted roster and it was perhaps the best job he has done in Baltimore since the ring winning campaign in 2013.
4. Ron Rivera- 55 points
Riverboat Ron has created a winning culture in Carolina which is a big achievement considering they had been perennial underachievers for many years. He has a flexible coaching style and his philosophy has improved the Panthers in many different ways.
He came close to a ring last year and you have to think he will eventually get that coveted prize.
3. Bruce Arians- 77 points
Not only is Arians a terrific NFL Head Coach, he is also an outstanding human being. He is the best coach in the NFL in dealing with character concern players as he makes them responsible for their own actions.
His offence is genius and he has turned Carson Palmer from a middle of the road quarterback to an MVP calibre player. Arizona are fun to watch and that is what Arians wants more than anything.
2. Pete Carroll- 89 points
Carroll joins a very small list of coaches to have won both a college championship and a Super Bowl and this is because he is great at all aspects of the game. His defence is legendary and he is great at choosing his co-ordinators and letting them have freedom to do what they want.
What Carroll is best at however is instilling a great ‘never-say-die’ attitude into his players. His teams play hard no matter what the score is and this mentality is the reason Seattle are the most feared team in the NFL.
1. Bill Belichick- 100 points
Every one of our contributors ranked him first and it’s easy to see why, he is the greatest coach in US Sporting history. He has unearthed a ridiculous amount of talent from the draft and off waivers and his systems have adapted to meet the needs of a constantly changing NFL.
His players always believe they can win and he gives seemingly average players the belief they can do anything.
